DINAN. (22)
One of the jewels in the Breton Crown is not an overstatement for Dinan which is one of the most beautiful towns in Brittany. The old houses and streets are surrounded by imposing ramparts and a magnificent castle. The town is situated on a plateau overloking the river Rance about 20km from the river estuary. The name Dinan is derived from the old Breton; Din or Dun meaning fortress. The position and fortifications of Dinan from very early times attracted craftsmen and merchants turning it into an important commercial port. Around the year 1000 a noble family settled in the area and constructed a wooden castle whose assault by William the Conqueror is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry. This noble family was named Dinan.

The population of Dinan is about 11500 but during the summer months it is not unusual to have almost the same number of tourists, as Dinan has a wealth of culturel, historical, architectural and artistic sites.
