BRITTANY
THE CYCLISTS' PARADISE

If you are thinking of an outdoor activity holiday but want something which is not too energetic, offers lots of opportunity for socialising and exploring then a cycling holiday is undoubtedly one of the best ways to combine healthy exercise whilst discovering Brittany. You can explore peaceful countryside, appreciate the contrasting landscapes and discover the surprisingly rich architectural heritage of this delightful part of France.
Brittany has a long tradition of cycling and is home to some of the world's great champions. At the heart of this love affair with cycling is the small town of Plouay which is situated about 15km from the port town of Lorient on the southern coast of Brittany. Plouay has hosted ; The Grand Prix, The tour de France and in the year 2000 is to be the venue for The World Championships. Every year since 1931, The Grand Prix de Plouay has been held here. This important cycle meet which is a difficult route over rough hilly countryside was recognised by The International Cycling Union and became a professional meet in 1975. Since this time the event has continued to grow and now attracts around 200000 spectators each year.
From the 1st to the 8th of August 1999 Brittany plays host to International Cycle Touring Week. This prestigious event is expected to attract at least 1500 participants from all over the world. These visitors will have the chance to explore Brittany by bicycle along a network of trails covering nearly 3000km. Whatever your preference in bicycles you will not be disappointed as this event is designed to offer something for everyone, from beginner to expert. Daily excursions of between 40 and 170km will give cyclists of all levels the possibility to ride out from Rennes as far as the "Gateways to Brittany", through pirate or granite country, retracing the route of Nominoe, King of Brittany or of Merlin the Magician. There will be four or five itineraries each day covering seaside and forest, roads and pathways and cycling or mountain biking.
The evenings are also well organised, with a week of socialising at Fest Noz, discotheques, fancy dress balls and firework displays.

Even if you do not come for these events you can still spend a delightful holiday exploring the local countryside by bicycle. The local town hall (Mairie) will be able to provide details of cycle trails in the area and where to organise bike hire.
